THE FORGOTTEN ART, INTAGLIO

Updated: Apr 2, 2023

If you seek into the details of our designs you can find the exciting artworks called ‘intaglio’ uniquely engraved onto the delicate gemstones.

Intaglio, an Italian word means ‘engrave’, is a jewellery technique that is used for engraving a design on the surface of a gemstone or metal, which dates back to antiquity. The technique has been used since the time of the ancient Egyptians to fashion intricate designs, symbols, and scenes into gems and coins. In the Ancient Roman Empire, owning an intaglio jewellery, whether commissioned or inherited, was a sign of one’s wealth and power. Their main use being to act as seals with hot wax, intaglio jewellery were designed out of both practicality and beauty.

THE DELICATE BEAUTY BEHIND IT

The beauty of intaglio jewellery lies in the details that can be carved into a gemstone or metal. Intaglio can be used to create patterns, symbols, and scenes, giving the piece a unique and magical quality. The combination of the designs and the natural beauty of the gemstone or metal makes intaglio jewellery truly special. Intaglio jewellery is perfect for special occasions, such as an engagement or anniversary. The details of the intaglio design can be used to tell a story, creating a piece of jewellery that is truly one-of-a-kind and will be treasured like an heirloom.

We feel that the jewellerys’ genuine ancient beauty is the result of The Charites London's meticulous engraving of each piece, which ends up in a unique item. Every design has an individual backstory which has been hand sculpted, engraved, and completed by craftsmen in Istanbul, Turkey's Grand Bazaar.

Our journey begins from the moment you come across with the design you desire and ordering it to going into inspiring adventures with your eternal design. With the same vision as the poets and thinkers who produced these myths, our aim is to spread knowledge, strive for greatness, and appreciate our designs’ divine beauty by making them unique by crafts like intaglio and hand sculpting to connect them with their story.
